An ancient market town with aged houses and narrow alleyways grouped round the timber framed 2 storey octagonal Market Cross, Wymondham in Norfolk has a resident population of approximately 12,000 and stands about 15km to the south-west of Norwich. Drawing in for tourists due to its historical Abbey, a former Benedictine Abbey, which dates from the 12th century, the town is also in the middle of a large rural parish.

Wymondham is furthermore renowned for two other unique points, the first is that it was home to a man called Robert Kett, who was head of a band of peasants in the famed peasants revolt of fifteen forty nine (called Kett's Rebellion), and second due to the Great Fire of Wymondham of 1615, a devastating incident which wiped out much of the town, in fact about 3 hundred buildings were destroyed in total.

Wymondham Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 675436Similar to plenty of towns in the area, Wymondham largely survived financially from wool, though a further craft for which Wymondham was well known was the manufacture of wooden goods, such as spoons, brushes, woodturning and similar merchandise.

The demise of the woollen trade during the mid-19th Cent resulted in a time of great poverty in Wymondham. In Victorian times the town didn't undergo any serious development and came to be a bit of a backwater, hence the result of this is that even in the twenty first century a lot of the town centre continues to be much as it will probably have been right after the Great Fire in the 1620s. These rebuilt buildings, and those that endured the Great Fire, continue to surround shoppers and sightseers as they mill around the ancient winding streets of Wymondham.

History of Wymondham: The settlement of Wymondham began, undoubtedly as far back as Anglo-Saxon times and the name (pronounced "Windham") doubtless originates from this period, quite possibly as a mixture of a personal name together with the expression for village or settlement ("ham"). The first charter to hold a weekly market (still held on Fridays even now) was issued in 1204 by King John and later renewed by Henry VI in 1440. The first Market Cross was burnt down in the Great Fire of Wymondham in 1615, the current one was erected in sixteen eighteen and is still one of the major monuments of the town.

Another of Wymondham's landmarks is the two towered Wymondham Abbey, first built in the 1300s and created predominantly for Benedictine Monks, it mostly made it through King Henry the Eighth's Dissolution of the Monasteries and was purchased by the habitants of Wymondham for to use as a parish church, a function which it continues to perform nowadays.

The 15th century Green Dragon is the oldest in the town, and one of the eldest structures. It was also named the "White Swan" and also might once have had the name "Saint George and the Dragon".

The town can be reached by means of the the B1135 or the A11, it is about 15 kilometers to the south-west of Norwich, roughly 48 kilometers to Great Yarmouth and approximately 108 miles from London. It could also be reached by rail.

Wymondham Bridewell - The Wymondham Bridewell was Wymondham's local prison, and has existed as a prison ever since approximately sixteen nineteen. The current, building (which is grade II listed), dates from the late 18th century. It shut as a bridewell and prison in the 1870s. Subsequently it had many uses such as museum, police station and courthouse. There were twenty two cells with iron beds and brick floors, each cell was sized approximately 12 feet by 7 feet. The Heritage Museum at the moment resides in the building. Footnote: A "bridewell" is a prison or reform school for petty criminals.
