A historical market town with traditional houses and narrow alleys arranged round the octagonal 2 storey timber framed Market Cross, Wymondham in Norfolk has a population of approximately twelve thousand and can be found roughly fifteen kilometres south-west of Norwich. Irresistible to for visitors because of its historic Abbey, at one time a Benedictine Abbey, that was first built in the 12th C, the town is also at the centre of a big rural parish.

Wymondham is also well known for 2 other specific reasons, the first is that it was home to a man called Robert Kett, who went on to lead a gang of peasants in the famous peasants revolt of 1549 (often known as Kett's Rebellion), and secondly because of the Great Fire of Wymondham of 1615, a dreadful happening that affected most of the town, indeed roughly 3 hundred houses and buildings were affected in total.

Wymondham Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 675436As you will find with plenty of Norfolk towns, Wymondham owed most of its prosperity to wool, nevertheless a further industry for which the town was well recognized was the making of small wooden products, for example brushes, spoons, woodturning and similar objects.

The deterioration of the woollen industry in the early to mid-19th century lead to tremendous poverty in the town. In the Victorian era the town never underwent any major growth and turned into something of a backwater, hence the result of this is that in these modern times a good deal of the town centre continues to be very much as it would have been following the Great Fire in the 1620s. Such rebuilt homes, in addition to the ones that survived the Great Fire, still surround travellers and shoppers as they pass through the narrow medieval streets of Wymondham.

Wymondham's Historical Background: The human settlement of the town started, definitely as far back as Saxon times and the name of the town (pronounced "Windham") in all probability stems from that time period, likely being a blend of a personal name and the word for settlement or village ("ham"). The 1st charter to hold a street market (still held on Fridays even today) was granted by King John in 1204 and later renewed in 1440 by Henry the Fourth. The original Market Cross was destroyed in the Great Fire of Wymondham in 1615, the present one was built in sixteen eighteen and remains one of the major landmarks in the town.

Yet another of Wymondham's landmarks is the twin towered Wymondham Abbey, first built in the 1300s and built predominantly for the Benedictines, it for the most part made it through King Henry the Eighth's Dissolution of the Monasteries and was purchased by the people of Wymondham for use as a parish church, a job which it still performs nowadays.

The fifteenth century Green Dragon inn is the oldest inn in the town, and among the eldest structures. It was at one time called the "White Swan" and in addition may well at one time have been called "St George and the Dragon".

The town can be got to by using the A11 or the B1135, it is approximately 15 kilometers south-west of Norwich, around 48km to Great Yarmouth and around 174 kilometres from London. It may also be accessed by railway.

Wymondham Bridewell - The Wymondham Bridewell was Wymondham's local prison, and has existed as a prison ever since about sixteen nineteen. The current, structure (which has a grade 2 listing), was established in the late eighteenth century. It was closed down as a prison and bridewell in eighteen seventy eight. Ever since then it had a range of uses such as police station, courthouse and museum. When it was a prison there were twenty two cells with brick floors and iron beds, the size of each cell was approximately twelve feet by seven feet. The Wymondham Heritage Museum at present occupies the building. Footnote: A "bridewell" is a reform school or prison for minor criminals.
