The collapse of the wool industry during the mid-nineteenth century resulted in a time of great poverty in the area. During Victorian times the town didn't undergo any substantial expansion and became a bit of a backwater, hence the outcome of this is that nowadays a lot of the town centre remains much as it will probably have been after the Great Fire in the 1620s. Those reconstructed buildings, in addition to those that survived the Great Fire, still surround shoppers and tourists as they mill around Wymondham's winding medieval streets.
