An ancient market town that has old houses and narrow alleys grouped about the 2 storey octagonal wood framed Market Cross, Wymondham, Norfolk has a population of roughly twelve thousand and sits roughly 15 kilometres south-west of Norwich. Fascinating to for travellers because of the historical Abbey (Wymondham Abbey), at one time a Benedictine Abbey, that was first built in the twelfth century, it is also at the heart of a sizeable rural parish.

Wymondham is also famous for two other unique points, the first is that it was home to a man called Robert Kett, who fronted a gang of peasants in the infamous peasants revolt of fifteen forty nine (known as Kett's Rebellion), and secondly because of the Great Fire of Wymondham of 1615, a terrible incident which affected the majority of the town, indeed about three hundred buildings and houses were affected in all.

Wymondham Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 675436As you will find with a great number of towns in the area, Wymondham gained much of its wealth from the wool business, nevertheless an alternative craft for which the town was reputable was the manufacturing of small wooden products, such as woodturning, spoons, brushes and similar merchandise.

The collapse of the wool trade during the mid-19th century resulted in a time of terrible poverty in the area. Through Victorian times the town didn't undergo any essential building work and came to be a bit of a backwater, hence the outcome of this is that in these modern times a significant part of the town centre remains much as it would have been soon after the Great Fire in the seventeenth century. These reconstructed houses, in addition to the ones that survived the Great Fire, still surround shoppers and visitors as they pass through the historic narrow alleyways and streets of Wymondham.

Wymondham's Historical Past: The settlement of Wymondham commenced, undoubtedly as long ago as Saxon times and the name "Wymondham" (pronounced "Windham") very likely comes from these times, quite possibly as a mix of a personal name together with the expression for village or settlement ("ham"). The initial charter to hold a street market (still held every Friday even now) was granted by King John in 1204 and later renewed in 1440 by Henry the Fourth. The original Market Cross was destroyed in the 1615 Great Fire of Wymondham, the current one was constructed in 1618 and survives as one of the primary icons of the town.

Another of the landmarks of Wymondham is the double towered Wymondham Abbey, first built in the 12th century and constructed primarily for the Benedictines, it surprisingly made it through the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry the 8th and was bought by the people of the town for use as their parish church, a function that it continues to perform today.

The 15th century Green Dragon pub is the oldest public house in the town, and one of the oldest structures. It was once upon a time named the "White Swan" and as well might possibly at one time have had the title "Saint George and the Dragon".

The town can be gotten to by using the A11 or the B1135, it is about 15km south-west of Norwich, roughly thirty miles from Great Yarmouth and around 174km from London. Wymondham may also be reached by rail.

Wymondham Bridewell - The Wymondham Bridewell was the local prison the town, and has functioned as a prison ever since around the early 1600s. The current, structure (which has a grade 2 listing), dates from the late 18th century. It closed down as a bridewell and prison in eighteen seventy eight. Ever since then it has had assorted uses such as museum, police station and courthouse. When it was a prison there were twenty two cells with iron beds and brick floors, each cell was sized approximately 12 feet by 7 feet. The Wymondham Heritage Museum at the moment resides in the building. Footnote: A "bridewell" is a prison or reform school for minor offenders.
