An old market town having old houses and narrow alleyways massed about the two storey octagonal timber framed Market Cross, Wymondham which is found in Norfolk has a resident population of approximately 12,539 and is located roughly nine miles south-west of Norwich. Fascinating to for visitors due to its historical Wymondham Abbey, a former Benedictine Abbey, that originates from the twelfth century, it is also at the center of a big rural parish.

Wymondham is furthermore famous for two other particular reasons, the first is that it was the home of a man called Robert Kett, who went on to lead a band of peasants in the infamous peasants revolt of 1549 (typically called Kett's Rebellion), and second due to the Great Fire of Wymondham in sixteen fifteen, a disastrous incident which ruined a lot of the town, in truth about 3 hundred houses were affected in all.

Wymondham Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 675436As is the case with a great many Norfolk towns, Wymondham owed a lot of its affluence to wool, yet an alternative industry for which the town was successful was the manufacturing of wooden items, for example woodturning, spoons, brushes and similar items.

The decline of the wool trade during the mid-nineteenth century produced dreadful poverty in the area. All through the Victorian era the town didn't undergo any essential growth and became a bit of a backwater, and the outcome of this is that nowadays a good deal of the town centre is still very much as it will probably have been after the Great Fire in the 17th C. These reconstructed homes, along with the ones which survived the Great Fire, continue to intrigue shoppers and travellers as they wander around the winding middle age alleys and streets of Wymondham.

Wymondham's History: The settlement of the town began, unquestionably as far back as Saxon times and the name (pronounced "Windham") probably stems from this period, quite possibly from a blend of persons name plus the expression for settlement or village ("ham"). The initial charter to hold a market (still held every Friday even today) was granted in 1204 by King John and later renewed in 1440 by Henry the Fourth. The original Market Cross was burnt down in the Great Fire of Wymondham in 1615, the current one was constructed in sixteen eighteen and survives as one of the primary landmarks in the town.

Another of Wymondham's landmarks is the twin towered Wymondham Abbey, first dating from the twelfth century and created predominantly for Benedictine Monks, it surprisingly made it through the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry the 8th and was purchased by the residents of the town for their use as their parish church, a job it still performs today.

The 15th century Green Dragon is the oldest inn in the town, and one of the earliest structures. It was at one time called the "White Swan" and in addition may possibly once have been known as "Saint George and the Dragon".

Wymondham can be accessed via the the B1135 and the A11, it is approximately 9.2 miles to the south-west of Norwich, around 48km to Great Yarmouth and around 174 kilometres to London. Wymondham can also be reached by train.

Wymondham Bridewell - The Wymondham Bridewell was Wymondham's local prison, and has acted as a prison ever since roughly the early 1600s. The current, building (which is grade II listed), was constructed in the 1780s. It closed down as a prison and bridewell in eighteen seventy eight. Since closing as a prison it had a number of uses for example police station, museum and courthouse. As a prison it had twenty two cells with iron beds and brick floors, each cell was sized roughly 12 x 7 feet. The Wymondham Heritage Museum currently occupies the building. Note: A "bridewell" is a prison or reform school for minor felons.
