An old market town with aged houses and narrow alleyways grouped around the timber framed octagonal two storey Market Cross, Wymondham has a population of about 12,000 and is situated approximately nine miles to the south-west of Norwich. A well known spot with travellers due to the ancient Wymondham Abbey, at one time a Benedictine Abbey, that was first built in the 1300s, the town is also at the center of a big rural parish.

Wymondham is furthermore significant for 2 other specific reasons, the first is that it was home to a man called Robert Kett, who went on to lead a group of peasants in the famed peasants revolt of 1549 (commonly called Kett's Rebellion), and second for the Great Fire of Wymondham of 1615, a tragic event which destroyed most of the town, the fact is close to 3 hundred homes and buildings were destroyed in all.

Wymondham Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 675436As you will find with a number of towns and villages in this region, Wymondham gained much of its wealth from the wool industry, nonetheless an alternative industry for which Wymondham was widely known was the making of wooden products, such as brushes, spoons, woodturning and similar items.

The collapse of the woollen industry during the mid-nineteenth century brought on tremendous poverty in the area. During the Victorian era Wymondham didn't undergo any serious growth and grew to be into a bit of a backwater, and the outcome of this is that these days much of the town centre continues to be much as it will probably have been right after the Great Fire in the 17th century. The reconstructed houses, together with those which made it through the Great Fire, still surround sightseers and shoppers as they stroll around the ancient winding streets of Wymondham.

Wymondham's Historical Past: The settlement of Wymondham commenced, certainly as long ago as Saxon times and the name of the town (pronounced "Windham") in all likelihood stems from that time period, most likely being a mixture of persons name and the expression for settlement or village ("ham"). The 1st charter to hold a street market (still held every Friday even today) was issued in 1204 by King John and later renewed in 1440 by Henry 4th. The original Market Cross was destroyed in the 1615 Great Fire of Wymondham, the existing one was constructed in sixteen eighteen and survives as one of the key monuments in the town.

One other of Wymondham's landmarks is the double towered Wymondham Abbey, originally built in the 1300s and erected chiefly for Benedictine Monks, it for the most part survived the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry the Eighth and was purchased by the people of Wymondham for use as their parish church, a job that it still performs in today's times.

The late 15th century Green Dragon inn is the oldest inn in the town, and one of the oldest buildings. It was at one time named the "White Swan" and as well may possibly once have had the name "Saint George and the Dragon".

The town can be gotten to by means of the A11 or the B1135, it is approximately 15 kilometers to the south-west of Norwich, around thirty miles to Great Yarmouth and approximately 174 kilometers to London. It may also be arrived at by rail.

Wymondham Bridewell - The Wymondham Bridewell was Wymondham's local prison, and has served as a prison since approximately the beginning of the 17th century. The existing, building (which is grade 2 listed), was established in the late eighteenth century. It was closed down as a prison and bridewell in the eighteen seventies. Ever since then it has had several uses for instance police station, museum and courthouse. As a prison it had 22 cells with iron beds and brick floors, each cell had a size or roughly 12 feet by 7 feet. The Wymondham Heritage Museum now resides in the building. Footnote: A "bridewell" is a prison or reform school for petty felons.
