A historical market town with aged houses and narrow alleys massed about the wooden framed two storey octagonal Market Cross, Wymondham has a resident population of roughly 12,500 and is situated around nine miles to the south-west of Norwich. Irresistible to for travellers due to the ancient Abbey, at one time a Benedictine Abbey, that was first built in the 12th century, the town is also at the center of a substantial rural parish.

The town is also notable for a couple of other unique reasons, the first is that it was the home of a man called Robert Kett, who went on to lead a band of peasants in the famed peasants revolt of 1549 (typically called Kett's Rebellion), and secondly due to the Great Fire of Wymondham in sixteen fifteen, a tragic incident which wiped out a lot of the town, in fact about three hundred properties and homes were affected in total.

Wymondham Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 675436Like many villages and towns in this region, Wymondham owed a lot of its prosperity to wool, and yet another business for which the town was successful was the making of small wooden items, for instance brushes, woodturning, spoons and similar merchandise.

The collapse of the woollen industry in the mid-19th century triggered great poverty in Wymondham. In Victorian times the town never underwent any serious growth and became a bit of a backwater, so the result of this is that in these modern times a good deal of the town centre is still very much as it will probably have been following the Great Fire in the 17th C. The rebuilt properties, and those that withstood the Great Fire, still surround shoppers and travellers as they negotiate Wymondham's narrow middle age streets and alleys.

The Historical Past of Wymondham: The settlement of Wymondham commenced, undoubtedly as long ago as Saxon times and the name of the town (pronounced "Windham") quite possibly stems from this period, perhaps as a mix of a personal name along with the word for settlement or village ("ham"). The original charter to hold a market (still held every Friday even today) was issued in 1204 by King John and later renewed in 1440 by Henry VI. The original Market Cross was destroyed in the 1615 Great Fire, the existing one was built in 1618 and continues as one of the primary icons of the town.

One more of the landmarks of Wymondham is the double towered Wymondham Abbey, initially built in the 12th C and built largely for the Benedictines, it mostly endured Henry the Eighth's Dissolution of the Monasteries and was purchased by the inhabitants of the town for their own use as their parish church, a job it continues to perform today.

The fifteenth century Green Dragon is the oldest in the town, and among the oldest buildings. It was at some point called the "White Swan" and may at one time been named "St George and the Dragon".

The town can be reached by way of the A11 and the B1135, it is roughly 9 miles south-west of Norwich, approximately 48 kilometres from Great Yarmouth and around 174km from London. It can also be gotten to by rail.

Wymondham Bridewell - The Wymondham Bridewell was the local prison for Wymondham town, and has functioned as a prison since around the early 17th century. The present, building (which is grade II listed), dates from the late 18th century. It closed as a prison and bridewell in the eighteen seventies. Subsequently it had multiple uses for example courthouse, museum and police station. As a prison it had 22 cells with iron beds and brick floors, each cell had a size or roughly 12 feet by 7 feet. The Wymondham Heritage Museum presently resides in the building. Footnote: A "bridewell" is a reform school or prison for petty criminals.
