A historic market town having aged houses and narrow alleys massed around the 2 storey wood framed octagonal Market Cross, Wymondham, Norfolk has a population of around 12,539 and stands about 9.2 miles to the south-west of Norwich. A favorite spot with tourists because of the ancient Wymondham Abbey, a former Benedictine Abbey, which dates from the twelfth century, the town is also at the heart of a large rural parish.

The town is furthermore memorable for two other distinct reasons, the 1st is that it was the home of a man called Robert Kett, who went on to lead a gang of peasants in the famous peasants revolt of fifteen forty nine (also known as Kett's Rebellion), and secondly due to the Great Fire of Wymondham in 1615, a dreadful incident which wiped out most of the town, in fact approximately 3 hundred homes and properties were burnt in all.

Wymondham Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 675436As is the case with countless towns and villages in this vicinity, Wymondham made much of its money from the wool industry, but a further craft for which Wymondham was successful was the making of wooden items, for example brushes, woodturning, spoons and similar items.

The collapse of the wool industry in the mid-19th century brought on tremendous poverty in the town. Through the Victorian era the town didn't undergo any serious building work and became a bit of a backwater, hence the consequence of this is that nowadays a significant part of the town centre remains much as it must have been in the time following Great Fire in the 17th C. The reconstructed dwellings, along with those which survived the Great Fire, still delight sightseers and shoppers as they stroll around Wymondham's narrow medieval alleyways and streets.

The History of Wymondham: The settlement of Wymondham started, surely as long ago as Anglo-Saxon times and the name (pronounced "Windham") most certainly originates from these times, probably from a mixture of persons name together with the word for settlement or village ("ham"). The original charter to hold a street market (still held on Fridays even today) was issued by King John in 1204 and later renewed in the 15th century by Henry VI. The 1st Market Cross was burnt down in the 1615 Great Fire, the current one was erected in 1618 and survives as one of the main icons of the town.

One more of Wymondham's landmarks is the two towered Wymondham Abbey, initially dating from the 12th C and created primarily for Benedictine Monks, it surprisingly endured King Henry the Eighth's Dissolution of the Monasteries and was acquired by the citizens of Wymondham for use as their parish church, a job which it continues to perform nowadays.

The fifteenth century Green Dragon pub is the oldest inn in the town, and among the oldest structures. It was at one time named the "White Swan" and may well once been called "St George and the Dragon".

The town can be got to by means of the A11 or the B1135, it is roughly 15km to the south-west of Norwich, about 30 miles to Great Yarmouth and roughly 174 kilometers to London. Wymondham might also be got to by railway.

Wymondham Bridewell - The Wymondham Bridewell was the local prison the town, and has existed as a prison since about the start of the 17th century. The present, structure (which is grade II listed), was erected during the late 18th century. It shut as a prison and bridewell in the 1870s. Since it closed it has had many uses for example courthouse, museum and police station. When it was a prison there were twenty two cells with iron beds and brick floors, each cell had a size or around twelve feet by seven feet. The Wymondham Heritage Museum now resides in the building. Note: A "bridewell" is a reform school or prison for minor felons.
