A historical market town that has traditional houses and narrow alleys gathered around the 2 storey timber framed octagonal Market Cross, Wymondham in Norfolk has a population of around twelve thousand five hundred and sits roughly 15 kilometers to the south-west of Norwich. A well known spot with travellers because of its ancient Abbey, a former Benedictine Abbey, which dates from the 12th C, the town is also at the heart of a big rural parish.

Wymondham is also notable for a couple of other distinct reasons, the first is that it was the home of Robert Kett, who went on to lead a band of peasants in the famous peasants revolt of fifteen forty nine (generally known as Kett's Rebellion), and second for the Great Fire of Wymondham in 1615, a devastating happening which affected the majority of the town, indeed roughly 3 hundred buildings were affected in all.

Wymondham Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 675436Similar to a number of towns in the vicinity, Wymondham owed a lot of its prosperity to wool, yet an alternative business for which the town was successful was the manufacture of small wooden objects, for example brushes, woodturning, spoons and similar items.

The collapse of the woollen trade in the early to mid-19th century lead to dreadful poverty in the area. During Victorian times the town never underwent any significant building work and came to be something of a backwater, so the result of this is that these days a significant part of the town centre remains very much as it would have been following the Great Fire in the 17th C. The rebuilt houses, together with the ones that endured the Great Fire, still delight sightseers and shoppers as they pass through Wymondham's winding medieval streets.

The Historical Past of Wymondham: The human settlement of the town began, undoubtedly as far back as Saxon times and the name "Wymondham" (pronounced "Windham") very likely hails from this time, quite possibly from a mix of persons name along with the term for settlement or village ("ham"). The first charter to hold a weekly market (still held every Friday to this day) was issued in 1204 by King John and later renewed in 1440 by Henry 4th. The very first Market Cross was destroyed in the 1615 Great Fire, the existing one was erected in 1618 and remains one of the principal icons in the town.

Yet another of the town's landmarks is the double towered Wymondham Abbey, originally built in the 12th century and built principally for the Benedictines, it for the most part endured the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry the Eighth and was acquired by the residents of Wymondham for their own use as their parish church, a function it still performs currently.

The late fifteenth century Green Dragon is the oldest inn in the town, and among the oldest structures. It was at one time known as the "White Swan" plus might once have had the title "St George and the Dragon".

Wymondham can be gotten to by way of the the B1135 and the A11, it is approximately 9 miles to the south-west of Norwich, roughly thirty miles to Great Yarmouth and approximately 174km from London. Wymondham also can be accessed by railway.

Wymondham Bridewell - The Wymondham Bridewell was the town's local prison, and has existed as a prison ever since around sixteen nineteen. The present, building (which is grade 2 listed), dates from the late 18th century. It was closed down as a bridewell and prison in the eighteen seventies. Since that time it had an assortment of uses including police station, courthouse and museum. There were 22 cells with brick floors and iron beds, the size of each cell was roughly twelve feet by seven feet. The Wymondham Heritage Museum at the moment occupies the building. Note: A "bridewell" is a prison or reform school for minor felons.
