A historic market town that has aged houses and narrow alleyways organized about the two storey wooden framed octagonal Market Cross, Wymondham has a populace of approximately 12,539 and is situated around 15km to the south-west of Norwich. Drawing in with visitors because of the ancient Abbey (Wymondham Abbey), a former Benedictine Abbey, that dates from the 1300s, it is also at the centre of a big rural parish.

Wymondham is furthermore significant for 2 other distinct reasons, the first is that it was home to one Robert Kett, who led a band of peasants in the well known peasants revolt of 1549 (sometimes called Kett's Rebellion), and secondly for the Great Fire of Wymondham of 1615, a disastrous event which destroyed most of the town, the fact is approximately 3 hundred properties were destroyed in total.

Wymondham Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 675436Similar to a lot of Norfolk towns, Wymondham owed the majority of its prosperity to the wool business, and yet an additional craft for which Wymondham was well known was the manufacture of wooden items, for example woodturning, spoons, brushes and similar merchandise.

The demise of the woollen industry during the mid-nineteenth century brought about a phase of dreadful poverty in the town. All through Victorian times Wymondham didn't undergo any serious building work and became a bit of a backwater, so the result of this is that even in the twenty first century a significant chunk of the town centre continues to be much as it would have been right after the Great Fire in the 17th century. Such rebuilt properties, and those which survived the Great Fire, still surround visitors and shoppers as they pass through the winding medieval streets and alleys of Wymondham.

Historical Background of Wymondham: The human settlement of the town began, undoubtedly as far back as Saxon times and the name (pronounced "Windham") most probably originates from that time period, most likely from a mix of persons name together with the term for settlement or village ("ham"). The first charter to hold a weekly market (still held every Friday even now) was issued by King John in 1204 and later renewed in 1440 by Henry VI. The first Market Cross was destroyed in the 1615 Great Fire, the latest one was constructed in sixteen eighteen and continues as one of the primary monuments of the town.

A further of Wymondham's landmarks is the double towered Wymondham Abbey, originally dating from the 12th century and established predominantly for Benedictine Monks, it for the most part withstood the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry the 8th and was acquired by the people of the town for their own use as a parish church, a job it continues to perform nowadays.

The late 15th century Green Dragon is the oldest pub in the town, and one of the earliest buildings. It was once upon a time named the "White Swan" plus might at one time have had the title "St George and the Dragon".

Wymondham can be reached via the A11 and the B1135, it is around 9 miles to the south-west of Norwich, approximately thirty miles from Great Yarmouth and around 174km to London. It can also be arrived at by train.

Wymondham Bridewell - The Wymondham Bridewell was the local prison for Wymondham town, and has been used as a prison ever since around the early 1600s. The current, building (which has a grade 2 listing), dates from the seventeen eighties. It shut down as a bridewell and prison in the eighteen seventies. Since closing as a prison it has had a number of uses for instance courthouse, police station and museum. As a prison it had 22 cells with brick floors and iron beds, each cell had a size or about 12 feet by 7 feet. The Heritage Museum now resides in the building. Note: A "bridewell" is a prison or reform school for petty felons.
