A historic market town that has old houses and narrow alleyways massed about the 2 storey octagonal wood framed Market Cross, Wymondham which is situated in Norfolk has a population of about 12,000 and sits around 15km to the south-west of Norwich. A well known area with sightseers due to the historical Abbey (Wymondham Abbey), a former Benedictine Abbey, which dates from the 1300s, it is also at the heart of a substantial rural parish.

The town is furthermore renowned for 2 other particular reasons, the 1st is that it was the home of a man called Robert Kett, who fronted a gang of peasants in the celebrated peasants revolt of 1549 (referred to as Kett's Rebellion), and second due to the Great Fire of Wymondham in sixteen fifteen, a dreadful happening that ruined the majority of the town, in fact close to 3 hundred properties were burnt down in total.

Wymondham Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 675436As you will find with lots of towns in the region, Wymondham owed much of its success to wool, nonetheless a further industry for which Wymondham was renowned was the making of small wooden objects, such as brushes, spoons, woodturning and similar merchandise.

The collapse of the wool industry in the mid-19th century contributed to tremendous poverty in the town. Throughout the Victorian era Wymondham never underwent any significant expansion and became a bit of a backwater, hence the consequence of this is that in today's times a good deal of the town centre remains much as it would have been after the Great Fire in the 1620s. The reconstructed properties, in addition to the ones which made it through the Great Fire, still delight tourists and shoppers as they negotiate the winding middle age streets of Wymondham.

Historical Background of Wymondham: The settlement of the town began, undoubtedly as far back as Saxon times and the name of the town (pronounced "Windham") most likely comes from this period, quite likely as a mix of a personal name with the term for settlement or village ("ham"). The initial charter to hold a street market (still held on Fridays to this day) was issued by King John in 1204 and later renewed in the 15th century by Henry VI. The first Market Cross was destroyed in the 1615 Great Fire, the current one was constructed in 1618 and is still one of the significant landmarks of the town.

One more of the landmarks of the town is the double towered Wymondham Abbey, first built in the 1300s and erected mainly for the Benedictines, it surprisingly endured Henry the Eighth's Dissolution of the Monasteries and was bought by the people of the town for use as a parish church, a job that it continues to carry out these days.

The late 15th century Green Dragon public house is the oldest pub in the town, and one of the oldest buildings. It was at some point known as the "White Swan" and also may well at one time been named "Saint George and the Dragon".

Wymondham can be reached by means of the the B1135 and the A11, it is roughly 9 miles south-west of Norwich, about thirty miles from Great Yarmouth and around 108 miles to London. It can additionally be got to by rail.

The present, building (which has a grade 2 listing), was established in the late eighteenth century. It closed down as a prison and bridewell in 1878. Since that time it had multiple uses such as courthouse, police station and museum. As a prison it had 22 cells with brick floors and iron beds, each cell had a size or approximately 12 x 7 feet. The Heritage Museum at present occupies the building. Footnote: A "bridewell" is a reform school or prison for minor offenders.
