A historical market town with traditional houses and narrow alleys massed about the wooden framed octagonal 2 storey Market Cross, Wymondham, Norfolk has a population of about 13,000 and can be found around nine miles to the south-west of Norwich. Drawing in with travellers due to its historic Abbey (Wymondham Abbey), a former Benedictine Abbey, that originates from the 1300s, the town is also at the heart of a big rural parish.

The town is also well known for a couple of other special reasons, the first is that it was the home of a man called Robert Kett, who was head of a band of peasants in the legendary peasants revolt of 1549 (typically called Kett's Rebellion), and secondly because of the Great Fire of Wymondham in sixteen fifteen, a calamitous happening which ruined much of the town, indeed approximately 3 hundred properties were destroyed in all.

Wymondham Abbey - geograph.org.uk - 675436As you will find with a great number of Norfolk towns, Wymondham owed the majority of its prosperity to the wool business, nonetheless a further business for which Wymondham was reputable was the making of small wooden products, including woodturning, spoons, brushes and similar items.

The collapse of the wool industry in the mid-19th century resulted in terrible poverty in Wymondham and the surrounding communities. Throughout Victorian times the town never underwent any serious growth and became something of a backwater, and the result of this is that in today's times a good deal of the town centre continues to be much as it would have been right after the Great Fire in the 17th C. The reconstructed properties, and those which survived the Great Fire, continue to surround shoppers and sightseers as they roam around Wymondham's winding medieval streets and alleys.

The Story of Wymondham Norfolk: The settlement of the town began, without doubt as far back as Saxon times and the name "Wymondham" (pronounced "Windham") probably comes from these times, quite possibly from a blend of a personal name along with the term for village or settlement ("ham"). The initial charter to hold a market (still held on Fridays even today) was granted by King John in 1204 and later renewed by Henry VI in 1440. The original Market Cross was burnt down in the 1615 Great Fire of Wymondham, the present one was built in sixteen eighteen and is still one of the main landmarks in the town.

One other of the landmarks of Wymondham is the two towered Wymondham Abbey, initially built in the twelfth century and established mostly for the Benedictines, it for the most part made it through the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry 8th and was bought by the citizens of Wymondham for to use as a parish church, a functionality that it still performs nowadays.

The fifteenth century Green Dragon public house is the oldest pub in the town, and among the oldest buildings. It was at one time called the "White Swan" and also may well at one time have had the title "Saint George and the Dragon".

Wymondham can be got to via the A11 or the B1135, it is around nine miles to the south-west of Norwich, about 30 miles from Great Yarmouth and approximately 108 miles from London. Wymondham also can be gotten to by rail.

Wymondham Bridewell - The Wymondham Bridewell was the local prison the town, and has operated as a prison since around 1619. The present, structure (which has a grade 2 listing), was established during the late 18th century. It closed as a bridewell and prison in eighteen seventy eight. Since that time it had quite a few uses for instance museum, police station and courthouse. As a prison it had twenty two cells with brick floors and iron beds, each cell had a size or approximately twelve feet by seven feet. The Wymondham Heritage Museum currently occupies the building. Footnote: A "bridewell" is a reform school or prison for minor offenders.
